My Personal Contribution To The Film

This project was a joint attempt at making a film but we split the roles equally. We came up with the idea together although i helped develop the idea from more then just a robbery to two guys mucking around trying to look for this mysterious item. When it came to filming i directed everything and i told Charley where to stand and what shot would look best. We managed to film everything in one day in about 5 hours which took a lot longer then i thought it would, just showed me how much preparation and time it takes to just shoot one scene. We edited the film on Charley's laptop on the software Final Cut Pro, we had to cut down 25 minutes of film down to 2 minutes but this was the hardest part because we had to choose shots that got the message across to the audience that we wanted. I helped Charley choose what to cut and keep but she had to do all the technical stuff on editing because it was on her computer and she knew a lot more about editing then me. The last point was doing our powerpoint evaluation and i did half of the questions and Charley did the other half, this didn't take too long because i know how to use powerpoint well and use all the effects on it. Once we had both finished our set questions we put the slides together to make it one powerpoint and uploaded it onto youtube.

The things i would do differently next time would be plan and prepare the film better and have a few more run through's before we shot the films and just organise everything better because i felt it was a bit rushed. Im really pleased with our final product and i think if it would ever be made into a movie it would appeal to a lot of teenagers because they can relate to the characters.

Technology used

We used Youtube for many things, for instance we used it to analyse a few opening title sequences to get a feel for how professional film producers chose to open certain films. We also used it to find clips for the genre we chose which was British Gangster Films or Crime Dramas. Then we took conventions from these genre of films such as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch etc and used their ideas to make up our own. We took the idea from the film Trainspotting and copied their idea of having the characters names on a freeze frame when the characters appeared.

this is a snapshot of the convention we copied from Trainspotting

We used this software called Final Cut Pro to edit our film on. This is where we edited out all the bits we did and didn't want and also added in freeze frames and music to our film to make it more entertaining for the audience.

Garage Band is what we created our music for our film on, we wanted to take music from another film and put it in ours but because of the whole copyright problem we had to make our own music, this was a challenge but we managed and our final product came out really well.

This site IMDB we used to watch trailers of films of the same genre and also watch clips from films, also we used this for finding out information about the films for example what certificate they were and also who directed them and who their distributor was.

Powerpoint we used to construct our evaluation and we spilt the questions we had to answer in half and went away and developed them into a powerpoint at the end we put them all together and added all the effects to make it more interesting

Blogger was where we planned all our work for the film and uploaded pictures of opening sequences to films and where we uploaded all our scripts, storyboards and pictures of the location we shot in.

Making Our Evaluation

Charley and I sat down and split the questions in half and went our separate ways and created our powerpoint. I work on a PC which has a very different powerpoint compared to a mac. I was doing the questions 2,3 and 4, they are 'How does your media product represent particular social groups', 'Who would be the audience for your media product' and 'How did you attract/address your audience'. These questions took a lot of thinking to come up with an idea because we have to make it interesting, not put too much information on the slides but also get the message across to the audience from the slides.
I have done my first draft of my slides but i need to improve a lot of things because i haven't used many media technologies in it.

Audience Feedback

Charley and I played our film to our classmates, friends and family to get feedback on what worked and what we needed to change. They all said they liked the way we shot it choosing lots of different shot sizes and types to make our film more interesting. They also said they liked the characters we chose because they were amusing to watch, we chose purposely for the characters to seem stupid and not know what they were doing to make our film funny and amusing to the audience. Although we didn't use much mise-en-scence the characters costumes were supposed to look the same as though one was copying the other, this may have not come across to the audience and maybe in the future something we need to work on.

The things some people said we need to improve on was there was one shot that was from inside the house that some people thought that there was some one inside the house when there wasn't. Also some of the shots were a bit shaking because we used a handle held camera, but we wanted it to be like that to show some authenticity to it.
On the whole our film got a lot of good feedback and there are things that did go wrong and we have taken into account and will possibly change if we think nescessary.

Editing

Editing is what i found hardest because i have never used final cut pro before and had never edited a film before this. The editing takes almost as long as it took to film because you have to keep a look out for continuity and making sure where we cut the audience wont be able to tell.
Charley did all the manual work e.g working on the computer and i just told her where best to put everything and we worked it all out together. Our film was about 5 minutes all together when we first cut it because we had so much movement in it that we didn't realise we needed to have it we can just cut to the actors at the next scene. We still have a lot to cut because we have to be very careful the film didn't have any obvious mistakes, we have so far used techniques such as freeze frames, voice over and I'm sure we will use more as we continue to edit.
We have used the universal distributor logo at the start to make it as close as we can to a real film in the cinema, in our opening titles the film Trainspotting they used a freeze frame of all the main characters and posted their names on the scenes so we interpreted this into our film and freeze framed on the actors posted their names on the scene to tell the audience who was who because their costumes were quite similar in our film.

Pictures of where we filmed, Cast List

We didn't have a big cast list because we had only two main characters to begin with in our opening sequence,
We wanted to cast two guys that looked scruffy and that were quite cheeky and guys that could be silly and act like idiots and have no clue about what they were doing.

We filmed once with Charley's brother and friend but we decided that they weren't what we were looking for and changed them to boys called
David Tann as Gary
Bogdan Klymeko as John

Filming

On Saturday Charley and I filmed our opening sequence and it took a lot longer then we thought. We planned on filming last week but I had trouble getting to Charley's house because of the snow and icy roads, Charley went along and filmed the outside scenes without me even though i was the one who was meant to be filming. We had to improvise because the two boys we were meant to use let us down last minute and so Charley had to use her brother and his friend. They manage to film most of the outside scenes without me, but was hard because of the snow. A few days later we were able to film the whole thing but again had to change the two actors because her brother and his friend were busy doing something else. We managed to find another two actors and we were able to film. Filming took about 2-3 hours this was a lot longer than we anticipated because we had to film from every angle and make sure we got the whole scene in the camera shot. We had to film the very first part about 3 or 4 times because one of the actors kept moving out of the shot. The other scene that took the longest was the gate scene because one of the boys had to climb over the top to unlock the door and let the other guy in, we had to film this from the centre, left, right, above, below etc just to get the right shot and cut it so our film flows. We changed a few lines of the script while we were filming because things fitted better with the film, the scene that most changed was the inside scene of the guys looking through all the owners DVD's because we had to get the right words to fit what the actors were doing. Filming our opening sequence was a lot more work then we thought because of how much footage you have to film to get the right shot and angle for the film to work. We've got about 25 minutes of filming with lots of mistakes that we need to cut out. I enjoyed filming because it taught me a lot about how much work goes into film that are 1 hours and longer, in the future i think we will plan a lot more in depth e.g. the camera angles and just going to the house and playing around with the camera to see what shot fits best this would of saved a lot of time but we will know this for next time.

Organising the 2 Minute Opening Sequence

The feature film is set at Charley's house. We use the drive the side of the house. The back door in the back garden, the kitchen and the tv room.

I am in control of the camera
Charley and I are the producers
Charley is the director

We filmed it on the 4th and 5th of January. We started film at 11.30 on both days and finished at 3.30. with short breaks in between. This is because it gets dark at around 4.00 now and we needed a light environment. We filmed the scenes set ext. on the 3rd and the scene set int. on the 4th.

Our Equipment list
